This latest installation, brought to life by Shirley Ryan AbilityLab, isn’t just a display of art — it’s a celebration of the human spirit and the boundless possibilities of ability.
The Inspiration Behind the Mural
As the #1-ranked rehabilitation hospital in the country, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has a clear mission: Advancing Human Ability. Every day, they help patients recover from severe conditions like traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, strokes, and more, guiding them toward their best outcomes. This mural reflects that vision, celebrating ability in all its forms through the lens of three patient artists who have journeyed through art therapy at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.
These artists were inspired to explore questions such as:
- What does ability mean to you?
- How has ability impacted your life?
- What does the future of ability look like?
Their answers took shape as three distinct murals, each infused with their personal experiences, artistic styles, and messages of hope.
Meet the Artists and Their Murals
North Panel: The Tree of Life
DeMarcus Purham’s mural is a testament to growth and resilience. Born and raised in Chicago, DeMarcus turned to art therapy during rehabilitation after his left foot was amputated following a work accident. Through art, he found a way to channel his frustration and emotional stress, creating cityscapes that echo his deep connection to Chicago. “This mural combines a Tree of Life with a cityscape design, symbolizing my passion to spark growth — physically, mentally, and artistically. It’s a reflection of my healing journey and my hope for others," says DeMarcus Purham.
East Panel: People Who Need People
Facing the Chicago skyline, Tobi Heekin’s mural explores connection and community. After a spinal cord injury left her paralyzed from the waist down, Tobi turned to art therapy to rebuild her dexterity and express her emotions. Her vibrant “amoeba people” represent the unique ways our abilities bring us together. In her own words Tobi added, “My mural celebrates connectivity through ability — the ways we support and uplift each other. It’s about focusing on what we can do and embracing the power of community, whether through family, friends, or the extraordinary care at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab.”
South Panel: Together We Can
Savi Valle’s mural radiates unity and hope. Diagnosed with Guillain-Barré syndrome, Savi worked tirelessly to regain movement and strength. Art therapy became a cornerstone of her recovery, helping her reclaim her fine motor skills and confidence. Today, her abstract works are inspired by collective growth and support. “Ability is a shared experience,” says Savi Valle. “My mural reflects the connection between individual journeys and the support systems that lift us up — family, friends, and the incredible teams at Shirley Ryan AbilityLab. Together, we can achieve so much more.”
